JOB VACANCY
Position: National GHG Inventory and MRV Expert
Project title: “Enhancing climate change transparency in Mongolia”, GCP/MON/11377/GFF
Duration: 20 months
General Information
The Paris Agreement, which builds upon and enhances the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, was adopted at the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) held in Paris in 2015. As of 2022, 195 Parties have joined the Paris Agreement. Under the Paris Agreement, Parties committed to substantially reduce global greenhouse gas emissions in order to limit the increase in global average temperature to well below +2℃ above pre-industrial levels, and pursue efforts to limit the increase to +1.5℃.
In order to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, countries are required to develop and implement Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), which outline the actions they will take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build resilience to adapt to the climate change.
In order to fulfill the requirements, set forth in Article 13 of the Paris Agreement, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) established the Capacity-Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) to support the development and enhancement of technical and institutional capacities in developing countries.
Within the framework of CBIT, the Ministry of the Environment and Tourism of Mongolia, with the support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), implemented the project “Strengthening Capacity in the Agricultural, Forest and Land-Use Sectors for Enhanced Transparency in implementation and Monitoring of Mongolia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)” in collaboration with Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), during the period 2019-2022.
The second phase of the project, “Enhancing Climate Change Transparency in Mongolia (CBIT-2),” is set to be implemented from 2024 to 2027. The project aims to support the implementation and enhancement of Mongolia’s NDC by strengthening the national systems required to fulfil the reporting requirements under the Enhanced Transparency Framework. The project is being jointly implemented by FAO and IRIMHE, with distinct responsibilities: FAO is responsible for overseeing the project's activities, implementation, and outcomes through the provision of technical guidance, while IRIMHE is tasked with ensuring the effective execution of day-to-day operations.
